About H. Michael Mogil

H. Michael Mogil is a certified consulting meteorologist with B.S. and M.S. degrees in meteorology from Florida State University (Tallahassee, FL). Mike has earned the American Meteorological Society's (AMS) Certified Consulting Meteorologist and Certified Broadcast Meteorologist ratings. He remains active in many organizations, including the AMS and the National Weather Association. (NWA).
He has practiced meteorology for almost 40 years, working closely with educators across the country since 1979. Mike also provides expert weather services to attorneys and insurance companies nationwide, provides programs for teachers and students in weather, writes books about weather and articles about weather and mathematics, writes online features about weather and math and helps operate the Mathworks Tutoring Center.
Mike has authored/co-authored several books about weather, weather experiments and a comprehensive teacher's guide for using the newspaper to study weather in the classroom. He has also developed several weather posters and cloud charts. He has written scores of articles for National science journals, and numerous other magazines and newspapers. Most recently, he spearheaded the development of a series on the WEATHER & CLIMATE OF THE STATES for Weatherwise Magazine. During 1999 he served as a consultant to the Discovery Channel's new WEATHER Field Guide. Earlier, he served as the weather consultant to Grolier's New Book of Knowledge Encyclopedias and Mississippi State University's "Teachers In Geosciences" Education Program.
Mike’s educational roots run deep. He has taught fifth grade math-science and has conducted scores of in-service teacher training workshops and graduate courses in meteorology and many workshops for young people nationwide. One of these, “Fabulous Weather Day” has been held at Kensington-Parkwood Elementary School (Montgomery County, Maryland) annually for the last 10 years. Currently, he serves as the Director for Howard University’s Summer Weather Camp Program, a nationwide effort (11 sites in 2011) for students in middle and high school with an interest in science and weather.
Mike is also an avid photographer and videographer with published weather photographs in numerous weather text and trade books, educational journals, various magazines, and the Washington Post. One of his pictures even graces a U.S. postage stamp. Mike was recognized by the NWA in 1988 for his "...outstanding efforts in weather education."
