Dear Representative Gordon:
It is time again to prepare for National Sky Awareness Week. My, how time has flown. This is the 10th annual celebration.
This year, the celebration will be held the week of April 23-29. And, we are requesting another Maryland proclamation. Hopefully, as he done in past years, Governor Glendening will provide it. If we can obtain it by early April, we plan to distribute it electronically and by hard copy across the state to various news and educational organizations.
We are pleased to report that major new gains have been made in recent years:
(1) Corporate support has blossomed. The Weather Channel, SAFESUN (a provider of hand-held ultraviolet meters), Dutch Boy Paints, and Polaroid Corporation have either provided materials for schools and/or publicized the event. The National Science Foundation is also continuing to work with us to link our celebration to its Science & Technology Week activities.
(2) The number of participating schools for the Internet data exchange continues to grow. Teachers have reported exceptional outcomes working with students. Many have incorporated art, mathematics, geography, and environmental awareness into the basic weather program.
(3) Information about Sky Awareness Week and its educational aspects is now posted on our Internet home page. We have started to post copies of state proclamations, there as well.
(4) We have now obtained proclamations from 42 states and the District of Columbia.
Interest throughout educational and weather broadcast circles has also grown exponentially. We have talked at several weather broadcaster and education conferences where interest was so high that we are now working on live national broadcast feeds. Several major educational magazines (circulations of 50,000 - 300,000) are again featuring SKY AWARENESS WEEK this year. And, for the seventh year in a row, SKY AWARENESS WEEK is included in Chase's Calendar of Annual Events.
Thank you and Governor Glendening for your long-term support. This significant educational undertaking never would have gotten this far without it!!
Sincerely,
