Welcome to our Geoscience news page. We hope this page and its content proves useful to you.

Here we will try try to capture the latest information about the Earth, its oceans, its atmopshere and space. By clicking on the links we have provided, teachers and students will be transported to important real-time and historical geoscience-based news events. Many of these links showcase how geoscience affects society, people, and things around us. All provide a focus to "current (science) events."

As always, the listing provided here is not designed to be all-inclusive. Also, some links may be dropped suddenly because they are tied to news media sites (and news tends to have a short lifetime, especially on the web). We will also work to reconstruct missing periods for the past 10 years to provide a single-focus geosciences page.

Please come back and check this page out often as we work hard to keep its content current for you.

Should you find that a site doesn't work properly or that has an outdated link, please let us know. We'll try to update it promptly.

With all this information at your fingertips, we are confident that you'll be a happy geoscience surfer!

January 1, 2012 - Volcanic Eruption and New Red Sea Island - December 2011 (nasa.gov) - NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites observed volcanic plumes between the 20th and 22nd of December. Other satellites confirmed the eruption. Here, images from the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite show before and after images of the formation of a volcanic island.

December 26, 2011 - Possible Geomagnetic Storm for Earth on December 28, 2011 (space.com) - The odds of a geomagnetic storm on Dec. 28th are improving with the launch of two Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) toward Earth in less than 24 hours. Check out NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft photography.

December 23, 2011 - Venus-Moon Conjunction on Evening of December 26, 2011 (science.nasa.gov) - Venus and a thin crescent moon hang out nearby one another in the western sky just after sunset on December 26, 2011.

December 13, 2011 - Geminid Meteor Shower to Peak on December 13, 2011 (space.com) - The Geminid meteor shower has been an annual event since the 1830's. However, this year's display may be tempered a bit because of a bright, almost full moon.

December 11, 2011 - A 6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Struck Guerrero, Mexico on December 10, 2011 (earthquake.usgs.gov) - A strong (6.5 Magnitude) earthquake struck Guerrero, Mexico on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 8:47 PM EST. Only three people died and damage was minimal, thanks to the depth of the quake (40.3 miles below the surface). The quake was felt from Aculpulco to Mexico City. December 4, 2011 - Drought Monitoring Using NASA Grace Satellites (jpl.nasa.gov) - Twin Grace (Center Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satellites are orbiting Earth to detect small changes in the Earth's gravitational field caused primarily by the redistribution of water on and beneath the land surface.

November 26, 2011 - Solar Radiation Storm Around Earth Underway (spaceweather.com) - A solar radiation storm is in progress around Earth. Late today, the storm was classified as minor. The same blast that caused the radiation storm also hurled a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) into space; this CME appears set to affect the Earth's magnetic field on November 28th. At that time, geomagnetic storms and auroras will be possible.

November 26, 2011 - NASA launches Mars "Curiosity" Rover (Wall Street Journal) - NASA's Curiosity rover blasted off on an 8.5 month, 354 million mile journey today. Its mission is to search for evidence that the red planet might once have been home to life.
