Weather satellites provide more than just pretty images. Satellites
can also probe the atmosphere to determine temperature and moisture
profiles (and hence atmospheric stability), much like soundings
by weather balloons. The resulting high resolution depictions
can be used to identify local regions of potential severe weather
development.

a web site that contains historical and other information about
severe storms from the eyes of seasoned and trained chasers.
