Take a look at this infrared GOES (geostationary) satellite image from October 1, 1999. The image shown is from 0915Z (9:15am Greenwich Time or 5:15am EDT).

Although there are many interesting features on this image, the most significant for us weather detectives involves the disappearance of the state of Florida. I can tell you that Florida is really still there, but we just can't see it in this image.
